Worlds Greatest Windsurfing Destinations

Thursday December 29

Windsurfing became the new fun thing to do in the late 1970's when one out of three households had a windsurfing board. Since technology was advancing making the boards lighter and stronger, it made it easier to transport to and from different locations. As the sport of Windsurfing progressed, new locations were discovered making each destination its own unique experience.

Across the globe specific spots were found where the wind could be relied on during a seasonal time of the year. These seasonal winds are called trade winds. One spot called the Fortunate Islands can count on the north-easterly winds every year from May to September making the Canaries Islands one of the top premier windsurfing destinations for European windsurfing enthusiasts.

For Windsurfers in the USA, some of the most popular locations are Oregon and the Gorges. This unique spot is a hay day for windsurfers looking for strong winds to do a little “Bump and Jump sailing”. One of the most popular spots in America to windsurf would have to be in the Pacific Islands of Hawaii. The city of Maui is home to the world famous Robby Naish who is a legend that pursued his career here in Maui on the shores of Hookipa Beach. Hookipa beach is the most photographed and referenced windsurfing spot in the world. Chances are if you wanted to become a top windsurfer you would definitely want to experience Hookipa beach for top notch waves.
