WINDSURFING IN MICHIGANSunday June 29
Nestled into the Northwestern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Torch Lake has been named one of the most beautiful lakes in the world by National Geographic. Torch Lake is Michigan’s longest (19 miles) and deepest (over 100 feet) inland lake with exceptionally clean water and a turquoise color that causes visitors to wonder if they might be in the Caribbean!
Torch Lake is a paradise for water-lovers. Swimming, fishing, diving, canoeing, kayaking and sailing are excellent, but for something a bit different—how about windsurfing. Windsurfing combines elements of surfing and sailing. A board is powered by the wind in a sail, and offers experiences like no other watercraft. Skilled “sailors” or “boardheads” can perform jumps, spins and plenty of other cool freestyle moves.
Torch Lake Windsurfing can set you up with equipment, lessons and the basic techniques you need to get started. “We are a tiny family business,” says Lisa, owner and instructor at Torch Lake Windsurfing. “We love what we do, we are addicted to the sport! We’ll teach seven year olds and 80 year olds!”
Lisa and her husband Dave, the certified instructors at Torch Lake Windsurfing offer plenty of one on one time with students. “No one is on the clock. Plan to spend the day. We do whatever it takes to for people to learn how to windsurf, and do it for a lifetime. After the lesson, we allow plenty of practice time,” promises Lisa. “We thoroughly educate you.”
“Windsurfing is a sport that is hard to learn from a video or in a big group,” explains Lisa. It takes the right equipment, the right weather and the right instructor. You don’t have to be an ace athlete. We do a lot of things to help, we start with our land simulator. You learn all about wind direction, how to read the wind, steering, tacking (turning around). And most important, steering with the wind direction so that once you’re out—you can get back!”
Torch Lake Windsurfing is located on a secluded private beach near the small town of Central Lake, Michigan. They are the only windsurfing outfitters/instructors in Northern Michigan. Of course Lisa and David are enthusiastic about windsurfing, but they also have kayaks and sailboats available for rent or purchase. They will do what it takes to make sure you have a wonderful vacation on lovely Torch Lake.
Torch Lake is about 17 miles Northeast of Traverse City, Michigan, a popular destination teeming with excellent shops, restaurants and events. The region is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts too, with biking and hiking trails, numerous golf courses, and of course—water, water everywhere! What is so cool about windsurfing? Just ask Lisa and David. “The wind-- can feel the wind. The wind is going through you—you are a part of it!”
