Fly the iconic chopper from the hit TV series MASHSaturday May 03
There’s a new (old) helicopter on the "radar". Lately the iconic chopper used on the show “M*A*S*H” has been flying above the tree lines of the New River Gorge.
Co-owners of River Expeditions, Rick and Heather Johnson, often only fantasized about offering helicopter tours, until Rick found the perfect helicopter online, it was simply a dream come true.
Once they purchased a 1959 Bell 47 G-2, the same type of helicopter used in the film and television series “M*A*S*H, their dreams became reality and Almost Heaven Helicopter Tours was born.
"It’s something my wife and I have wanted to do for a long time," Johnson said. "I’m hoping it’ll bring life back to the airport." Almost Heaven Helicopter Tours is located at the airport on Hinkle Road in Oak Hill next to Wild Blue Adventure Co.
Experience spectacular aerial views of the New River Gorge Bridge and thrill of flying in a Bell 47-G2 Chopper that seats three people, including the pilot. Everyone has a window seat. You will be amazed with the view from the bubble canopy once the helicopter peaks over the plateau of the Gorge River.
Depending on the weather, wind and visibility, the helicopter will fly around 500 to 1,000 feet off the ground. The Gorge helicopter tours are affordable and geared toward families. The next closest place to go on a helicopter sightseeing tour is in Catlettsburg, Kentucky.
Strapping into the door-less helicopter is something you will need to experience for yourself. The Bell 47 G-2 is tried and proven from the ’40s through the ’70s with millions of hours of flight time. But don’t worry, the helicopter is rebuilt every 1,200 hours. Comfortable headsets let you communicate with the pilot and guest.
Being the owners of River Expeditions, the Johnsons thought they experienced the only way to truly view the Gorge. However, they agree the best way to “Hawkeye” the Gorge is via helicopter.
